Coach Insurance

This class of insurance is available from only a limited number of insurers. It is viewed more as a catastrophe type of cover and is, therefore, priced accordingly. The fear is that a coach full of passengers, involved in a serious accident, will produce a catastrophic claim – possibly of many millions.

Typically, a summary of cover would be:

  1. Comprehensive cover – this covers damage to the vehicle and your liability to any third party, including the passengers on the coach.
Subject to a £250 accidental damage fire and theft excess
  2. Windscreen cover – this can be added to coach insurance policies at an additional premium.
  3. Named and approved drivers – or if the fleet is larger than, say, five vehicles, driving can be extended to any driver over the age of 25 and under 65 and who has held their PSV licence for more than two years.
  4. Legal Expenses insurance. This covers any uninsured loss in the event of a not at fault claim. If a driver is injured in an accident, then this policy will seek compensation from the third party for the damages or injuries incurred.
  5. Green Card cover – this is needed to ensure that the full policy benefits are extended to cover you and your vehicles whilst travelling in the European Union and other Green Card countries.

The UK Coach insurance market

It is difficult to be precise on the actual premium volume, but here are some statistics extracted from the Confederation of Passenger Transport (CPT) web site, for 2003: -

  1. There are 80,100 buses and coaches registered with the CPT, of which 21,700 are coaches. (To this figure we will need to add a further 30-50%, to account for those coach operators who are not members of the CPT. The total number of coaches operating in the UK could be approx 30,000).
  2. The turnover of the UK coach industry is expanding and will approach £1.8bn in 2004.
  3. The average age of the bus and coach vehicles is decreasing from 9.9 years in 1994 to 8.4 years in 2001 to less than 8 years (potentially) in 2004. Investment in new buses and coaches is approx £500m p.a.
  4. Operating costs have increased in recent years and, quoting directly from the CPT web site…”over the last two years they have increased by 9% in real terms….reflecting labour and insurance cost pressures”.
  5. During the year to August 2002, the average coach operators’ premium increased by 28%. (Since then, the rate of increase has fallen away, but rates are still increasing or, staying at these levels).
  6. Coach operators have not only faced increased premiums but also this has been combined with less cover – higher excesses, no windscreen cover etc.

Demands and needs

It is most important to establish the insurance demands and needs of your business before any advice can be given to you. Each company will operate in its own way and will have different demands and needs. This applies to any insurance policy offered to you and your company. We will insist on a full demands and needs statement before confirming cover to you.
